Sales tax refund after moving state?

I am currently a NJ resident planning to move to Boston, the sales tax on new vehicals in NJ is 7%, while in Boston is 5%. If I buy a car in NJ, and then move to Boston within 2 weeks, can I get the refund on the difference, or am I better of buying a car in Boston itself. I still have 3 weeks till I move, and I really need a car. Any advise would be appreciated

When you buy the car, the deal is done and New Jersey won’t give you a refund. Instead of thinking about 7% versus 5%, put the difference into dollars and look at it from the point of view of use of a car versus savings.

P.S. If you don’t buy the car now, what will it cost you to get yourself to Boston and will you have to rent a car or take cabs for the next 2-3 weeks? Moving is enough of a hassle. Do whichever is more convenient. I doesn’t sound like you’re talking about that much money in the long run.

P.P.S. If you buy now, you’ll have to pay to register the car in New Jersey and to re-register in Massachusetts. Again, not a significant amount of money, but it’s something to put into the equation.
